Machine Woodworking 101 at Needham Furniture Makers

This class will cover how to safely and effectively operate woodworking machine tools. We will turn rough lumber into a finished piece (a wine/liquor bottle gift box), through safe training, demonstration and guidance on the operations of a bandsaw, jointer, planer, table saw, and drill press. You will take away knowledge in basic wood technology (e.g. wood movement and grain direction), basic machine maintenance, and most standard machine operations. The instructor will also address any questions you may have along the way. Project materials (such as wood) are covered by the cost of the class. Note: Please bring your own safety gear (i.e., safety glasses and ear protection) and an accurate combination square. Limited to 5.

Introduction to Hand Tools

Instructors: Justin Garnache and Peter Stein

This class will cover how to safely and effectively utilize three basic hand tools: a hand plane, a chisel and a router plane. Through demonstrations and exercises, we will use a hand plane to dimension, smooth and square wood for an oil stone box. We will learn to precisely layout our design with a knife and marking gauge and how to chop and pare with a chisel. Finally, we will finish our boxes with a router plane. The instructor will also address any questions you may have along the way. Project materials (such as wood) are covered by the cost of the class. Tools (planes, chisels, marking gauges and knives, and router planes) will be provided. Note: Please bring an accurate combination square and pencil. Limited to 6.
